Culture in the UAE reflects traditional Arab and Islamic values, with noticeable influences from Persian, Indian, and East African cultures apparent in the country’s architecture, folk arts, and fashion. The people of the UAE are referred to as “Emiratis” – they are sociable and warm hosts who treat guests with grace. They use the customary greeting “As-salam alaikum”, meaning “peace be upon you”. If an Emirati greets you with “As-salam alaikum”, be sure to return it with “Wa alaikum as-salam”, which means “and upon you be peace”.
