Living Like a Local: Budget-Friendly Tips for Interns in Hong Kong

Located right on the edge of the South China Sea, Hong Kong is most widely known for its towering skyscrapers, vibrant culture, unique fusion cuisine, and bustling streets.ย

For students and young professionals, living in such a dynamic city is an exciting adventure experience โ€” especially if itโ€™s your first time moving away from your home country. With a little smart planning, you can make the most of your experience without stretching your budget.

Weโ€™ve compiled some finance-friendly, intern-approved tips for those heading to Hong Kong: from accommodation and dining to free activities and smarter shopping.ย

Housing on a Budget.

If youโ€™ve joined a program with RMC Asia, you will likely get accommodation from your host organization. However, if you want to find your own place, youโ€™ll need to look into some affordable housing options โ€” rented accommodation is on-demand in Hong Kong!

Start by exploring options like shared apartments, hostels, or co-living spaces. Research flat-sharing websites and Facebook groups for expats and international students โ€” these will often list available rooms and flats. If you’re staying for a short period, look into short-term rentals or sublets, which are often more cost-effective and flexible.

Where you live in the city also greatly affects rent prices. When it comes to neighborhoods, consider Tai Po, Kwai Chung, or Tseung Kwan O. These areas are well-connected by public transport and offer a safe environment at a fraction of the cost of central districts.

Affordable Transportation.ย

Getting around Hong Kong is easy and affordable, thanks to the city’s super-efficient public transport system: the MTR, buses, and trams are your best bet for cheap and reliable transportation. Youโ€™ll also want to get an
Octopus Card, which can be used for all forms of public transport and offers discounted fares.

If you’re staying in a walkable area, consider walking or cycling to work to save money. Walking allows you to explore the city at your own pace, while cycling is a great way to stay fit and reduce transportation costs.

Budget-Friendly Dining.ย

Part of the perks of participating in an RMC Asia program is that youโ€™ll typically get 2 to 3 meals a day as part of your work contract. But, if youโ€™re going out, we highly recommend you explore Hong Kongโ€™s unique food scene!

Hong Kong is famous for its diverse and delicious cuisine, but dining out too frequently can quickly add up. To eat well without overspending, look for street food: local eateries and dai pai dongs (open-air food stalls) offer affordable and authentic meals, such as dim sum, wonton noodles, and egg waffles.

Of course, you will save even more by cooking at home. For fresh, inexpensive groceries, head to your local wet markets and supermarkets. Sham Shui Po Market and Kowloon City Market are popular among locals for their variety and affordability.

Best Low-Cost Activities.ย

You don’t need to spend a lot to enjoy all that Hong Kong has to offer. The city is rich in natural beauty and cultural heritage, which means plenty of free things to do for both locals and visitors.

ย

For outdoor adventures, explore the best hiking trails in Hong Kong, such as Dragonโ€™s Back, Victoria Peak, or Lantau Island. These paths in nature offer breathtaking views and a refreshing escape from the urban jungle. Beaches like Repulse Bay and Shek O are perfect for a relaxing day by the sea (without spending a cent).

Cultural experiences can also be accessible on a budget. Visit temples like Man Mo Temple, head to the Hong Kong Museum of History, or attend local festivals. Many museums offer free admission on specific days, so keep an eye out for these opportunities!

Shop Smart!ย

Shopping in Hong Kong can be an exciting experience, especially if you know where to go. Markets like the Ladies’ Market in Mong Kok and Temple Street Night Market are famous for great deals, where you can find affordable clothes, accessories, and souvenirs. Haggling is common, so don’t be afraid to negotiate for a better price.

For more sustainable and affordable shopping, check out second-hand stores in Hong Kong. These shops often have great deals on clothes, books, and electronics. Websites like Carousell also offer a platform for buying and selling second-hand items.

To further stretch your budget, make use of discount apps and coupons. Apps like Klook and Eatigo offer discounts on dining, activities, and entertainment, helping you save money on everyday expenses.

Socializing Without Breaking the Bank.

Hong Kong’s nightlife is always buzzing with energy! To keep things budget-friendly while enjoying hangouts with your friends, look for happy hours and promotions at bars in Central, Wan Chai, or Tsim Sha Tsui. Many places offer discounted drinks and food during specific hours!

Consider joining social groups or clubs that offer free or low-cost activities, such as hiking clubs, language exchange meetups, or volunteer organizations. These groups provide opportunities to meet new people, explore the city, and participate in fun activities at little to no cost.

Ready to jet off to Hong Kong?ย

While RMC Asiaโ€™s internship programs will grant you a monthly allowance, you should still manage your finances wisely. You may want to create a personal budget that accounts for your income, expenses, and savings goals โ€” try using a budgeting app to track your spending.
